WHAT WE DO

Mission Statement

To empower people with profound contemplative practices that support their aspirations to become better people and to make a better world.

To do this by providing powerfully transformative practices of innate compassion and wisdom from Tibetan Buddhism, adapted into forms that are accessible to people of all backgrounds and faiths.

To thereby help people find an unconditional power of care from within that is deeply healing and sustaining, and that helps them become more fully present to themselves and to others within their relationships, service and social action.

To enliven and inform the spiritual lives of people of diverse traditions by teaching these practices in contexts of deep inter-religious exchange and interdisciplinary learning.

To maintain an enriching connection with the depth of wisdom and experience held by teachers and institutions of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

From the Teachers

Attaining stable self-recognition

To sum up, the practice of Dzogchen allows the fundamental nature of oneʼs mind, the boundless expanse of pure awareness and openness, to attain stable self-recognition. That is enlightenment: the enduring recognition of all experience as the radiant expression of primordially pure awareness. This realization cuts through the self- imposed limitations of oneʼs mind to unleash tremendous liberating powers of love, compassion, joy, and creativity from the ground of oneʼs being, which can inspire and uplift many others. It is also the foundation of a wise equinimity that senses all others as essentially undivided from oneʼs self, making oneʼs love and compassion unconditional, all-inclusive, and inexhaustible.

Unleashing the power of enlightened qualities

…[T]he complete realization of enlightenment is experienced communally, embodied in joyous communion with many others through the wise love that wills deepest freedom for all. To be fully enlightened is to have fully unleashed the liberating power of such enlightened qualities, so that they spontaneously bless and evoke the corresponding goodness dormant in the hearts of many other beings.

Our primordial capacity for wisdom

Only our inmost goodness can sense so directly the essential purity and goodness of others. We let our buddha nature, our primordial capacity for wisdom and love know others in their buddha nature, their intrinsic worthiness and holiness. We learn to “see” beings from the depth of our heart, rather than through ego-grasping consciousness.

The nature of thoughts

Thoughts are the radiant expression of our mindʼs clear, quiescent, and infinitely spacious nature. They arise from that nature and dissolve into it. Our job is not to struggle with them or to try to stop them, but merely to allow them the freedom to self- dissolve into their own radiant, empty ground, like ocean waves dissolving back into their own wateriness.

Connecting to what others are experiencing

To connect with what others are going through we have to become vividly and newly aware of what we ourselves are going through, in all layers of our being. If we donʼt have awareness of our own layers of struggle and fear and suffering, we canʼt establish a clear connection to what others are experiencing. To truly empathize with others, we must be able to sense from within the layers of suffering we all share. Not just in terms of what we are currently feeling but also on more subtle levels: our personal struggles to hold on to what is dear, to maintain security, to avoid loss and death.
