WHAT WE DO

Mission Statement

To empower people with profound contemplative practices that support their aspirations to become better people and to make a better world.

To do this by providing powerfully transformative practices of innate compassion and wisdom from Tibetan Buddhism, adapted into forms that are accessible to people of all backgrounds and faiths.

To thereby help people find an unconditional power of care from within that is deeply healing and sustaining, and that helps them become more fully present to themselves and to others within their relationships, service and social action.

To enliven and inform the spiritual lives of people of diverse traditions by teaching these practices in contexts of deep inter-religious exchange and interdisciplinary learning.

To maintain an enriching connection with the depth of wisdom and experience held by teachers and institutions of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

Unconditional love and wisdom

The path to embodying unconditional love and wisdom is not some overwhelmingly difficult struggle to make ourselves into something alien to our nature. Quite the opposite. Unconditional love and wisdom dawn as we come home to what we most deeply are. Our deepest wish is already impartial love; our deepest knowing already intuitive wisdom beyond self-clinging. We just need to learn to relax our grip on ourselves enough to allow those capacities to awaken within us and shine forth.

Tremendous capacity of wisdom and love

We practice to become receptive to the tremendous capacity of wisdom and love that is hidden in our being, to let the practice bring these qualities out with such force that they start to release us from the ego-centered causes of suffering in our minds, freeing us finally to become what we had most deeply intended-a real benefactor for this world.

Compassion as a liberating force

Compassion wishes beings to be free from their suffering. If we donʼt really believe that they can be free-that deep freedom, security, well-being, and joy is a real human possibility-our compassion tends to lapse into despair. Then it is not a liberating force for anyone. Compassion becomes a liberating force when we know the freedom that it wishes for beings to be real.

The vast nature of goodness

Through non-conceptual meditation, we start to sense the vast nature of goodness that had been hidden by our ego-clinging. And we sense that this is equally true for all the others around us. Together we have been lost from our true nature and together have suffered for it. From this recognition flows tremendous loving compassion for all beings equally.

Below the radar of self-centered understanding

Through the meditation, potent energies of knowing and loving that had been hidden in our minds are unleashed. Indeed, it begins to dawn on us that, as we extend love, we are not just wishing for others to have well-being and joy, we are actually communing with the primordial well-being that already abides in the nature of their minds. Our buddha nature is communicating with theirs, below the radar of self-centered understanding.
