FAC in Community

Here are some of the members of the Foundation for Active Compassion (FAC) Community describing how these practices are helping them in their daily life, in their work, and in their contributions to well being of others.

PRISON MEDITATION
PORTLAND, MAINE

Providing an atmosphere for others to get quiet and settle into their own deepest recesses has been a sincere pleasure of mine since I have been leading meditation. Whether I lead the group on Tuesday evenings here in our Meditation Group in Portland, Maine, or I am asked to facilitate the meditation in some other setting, I am always amazed at the “grace” that settles over me and the folks participating. It is as if just sitting down on our cushions begins a journey away from a nervous system that is constantly reacting to one that is responding in an intimate and very personal way. I feel a deepening in me that I know will change for the better my way of relating to the world. I feel it instantly. It amounts to unplugging from the normal ways we react and instead plugging into our innate goodness, our real and abiding self.

In particular I have used meditation and the practices of wisdom and compassion to help prisoners find their hearts again. They have told me how it works for them -- how they feel expansive and more loving when the practice is brought to them in prison, where there are so few opportunities to be met with an open heart and to be asked to think of others as having difficulties too. It is my observation that those who are in trouble in our society have led a life devoid of the opportunity to be introspective and loving toward themselves. As soon as this is available to them they begin to see how it works, that opening one’s heart means that a door opens two ways, in and out. I feel great privilege and gratitude for having the good fortune to witness their lives coming into balance.
